New bill for SA Parliament
Following the SA Parliament rising for the summer break last November, new Premier, Jay Weatherill, prorogued the parliament; meaning that all bills that had not had a resolution in either house would be removed from the Notice Paper.
This meant that the three euthanasia bills on the Notice Paper last year; two standing in the name of Steph Key MP and one in the name of Bob Such MP, were no more.
Steph Key’s Medical Defences Bill, which was the subject of serious debate last year, could be restored to the Notice Paper by request of the member – but this has not happened thus far in 2012.
However, Bob Such MP has re-introduced his bill with some minor changes that we do need to address.
Private Members’ Bills such as these only have available one hour per sitting week for debate. This often means that bills do not progress quickly, if at all. But this may not be the case with the Such Voluntary Euthanasia Bill 2012.
Currently there are only a few items of private members’ business listed on the Notice Paper. This may be Bob Such’s best chance of getting his bill to a vote.
Please take the time to contact your local Member of Parliament to voice your concerns.
As the 2012 sitting period commences, it is critically important that we remind our local MPs that we want them to oppose this and all euthanasia bills.
